Internship/Volunteering for Local Students

UN Department of Public Information, Yerevan Office*

(Part-time with flexible schedule, unpaid)

 DURATION:      Three months with possible extension.

 LOCATION:      UNDPI Office, UN House, Yerevan, Armenia.

 WHEN:  Throughout the year except January and August.

 ABOUT: The United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI) is the public voice of the UN and the principal source of information about the United Nations system. It promotes global awareness and greater understanding of the work of the UN, using various communication tools including press, electronic and new media. More information about UNDPI activities is available at www.un.am.

 The incumbents will work under the general supervision of the UNDPI Representative and under daily supervision of the UNDPI Information Officer.

 GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • provide support to the UNDPI office in organizing meetings, press events, and other activities;
  • take photos during UN events;
  • provide administrative support to the UNDPI staff;
  • Undertaking any other relevant tasks when necessary.

In each individual case responsibilities will be identified based on the background, specific skills and interests of the incumbent.

 MANDATORY SKILLS:

  • Basic knowledge about United Nations, its global and national agenda;
  • Fluent knowledge of Armenian and English languages;
  • Knowledge of MS Office, internet, and social media;
  • Knowledge of Armenian political, social and economic environment;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize and maintain a flexible schedule;
  • Personal responsibility, accuracy and punctuality;
  • Ability to work in a team as well as individually;
  • Respect to gender and cultural diversity.

SPECIFIC TASKS:

 1.     Translations:

Responsibilities:

  • translate UN documents from English into Armenian and vice versa;
  • transcribe, translate and add subtitles to UN films;

Required Skills

  • strong translation and writing skills;
  • knowledge of some open source subtitling software.

 Media monitoring/press clippings and social media:

Responsibilities:

  • review local media and contribute to preparation of press clippings;
  • monitoring of media coverage of the UN activities in Armenia;

Required Skills

knowledge of Russian language is an asset;

  • basic knowledge of media field and social media

 .3.     Research:

Responsibilities:

  • contribute to the content for updating the www.un.am website;
  • research and compile new materials;

Required Skills:

  • sound knowledge of the UN, international relations, communications, and international law;
  • good bilingual writing skills.

 4.     Design and photography:

Responsibilities:

  • assist with design of UN-related publications and other materials;
  • prepare photos for website and publications (photo-editing);

Required Skills

  • knowledge of design software (illustrator, in-design, etc);
  • knowledge of info graphics and other multimedia software.

 5.     Administrative and outreach/library work:

 Responsibilities:

  • provide support to the UNDPI Office in organizing meetings, press events, and other activities;
  • take photos during UN events;

Required Skills:

  • assist with sorting and maintenance of library materials;
  • assist UNDPI staff with filing and other office duties.

 HOW TO APPLY

4th –year undergraduate students and above with a background of international relations, international law, international economics, political science, English language, journalism, graphic-design, and other relevant studies are eligible to apply.

 Each applicant should submit the following papers to his/her respective educational institution’s Career Center or relevant department:

  1. Curriculum vitae in English;
  2. Motivation letter in English (with preferred period of internship mentioned);
  3. Letter from his/her respective educational Institution signed by the Head of Department or Career Center.

 Application packages should be preliminary reviewed by the Career Centre. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

 The incumbents will be selected on a competitive basis, i.e. a computer-based written test and interview, which will be organized by the UNDPI.

 The interns will be provided with office space and internet access. Upon successful completion of the three-month internship the incumbent will be provided with a Letter of Reference.

Note:
