New Leadership Elected for the Federation
On October 4, the Armenian State University of Economics hosted a general assembly and leadership election, marking the 30th anniversary of the Armenian Student Sports Federation (ASSF). The event brought together prominent figures, including Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Karen Giloyan; President of the European University Sports Association (EUSA), Adam Roczek; EUSA Secretary General Matjaz Pecovnik; as well as representatives from Armenian universities, sports federations, and the EUSA leadership.
In his opening speech, ASUE Rector Armen Grigoryan congratulated the federation on its milestone anniversary, commending its work in promoting student sports. He expressed hope for its continued focus on developing sports, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and inspiring others to be active. “Physical health is the foundation of a balanced life, as a healthy body fosters a healthy mind and spirit,” Grigoryan noted.
Karen Giloyan, Deputy Minister of Education, praised the ASSF, with particular mention of its president, Hovhannes Gabrielyan, whose commitment has brought fresh perspectives to student sports in Armenia. "Globally, student sports play a significant role. For Armenia, it’s an important opportunity to be present in international competitions and to achieve success,” Giloyan said, adding that the federation will soon receive additional resources to further expand Armenia’s participation in international student sports. He also highlighted the upcoming European University Chess Championship, scheduled for September 2025 in Yerevan.
Adam Roczek, EUSA President, stressed that student sports are a key part of education, assuring that Armenia has a rightful place within the European sports community.
ASSF President Hovhannes Gabrielyan, who also heads the Physical Education, Emergency Situations, and Civil Defense Department at ASUE, presented a report titled “University Sports in Armenia 2020-2024.” He reviewed the federation’s activities over the past five years, celebrating its achievements and the successes of student athletes at both national and international levels. He also outlined future plans and offered recommendations for further progress.
The assembly, attended by 35 delegates from 25 organizations, re-elected Hovhannes Gabrielyan as President and appointed Mesrop Ghukasyan as Secretary General, along with the federation’s leadership team.
Armen Grigoryan, Vice President of the Armenian National Olympic Committee, congratulated Gabrielyan and presented him with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of Gagik Tsarukyan, President of the Armenian National Olympic Committee.
The event concluded with a formal award ceremony, where the federation honored senior partners, guests, federations, organizations, and universities with certificates of appreciation, awards, and gifts.
